Inquiry hears of land use
Monday 19th November 2007, 11:41AM GMT.
Campaigners trying to stop an area of land in Shrewsbury being turned into a car park have used the site for recreational use for more than 60 years, an inquiry was told today.
The inquiry to decide whether the field in Frankwell should be protected and turned into a village green began at the Guildhall this morning.
Campaigners are trying to use 19th century legislation to stop Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council building a 200-space extension to Frankwell car park at the site.
Giving evidence today Trevor Ball, of Darwin Gardens, Mountfields, said he was a member of Shrewsbury Youth Club in the 1940s and used the land, known as Barfield, for football matches.”
Graham White, solicitor for Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council said the land had been rented to sports teams on a commercial basis for many years.
He said: “Restrictions are in force on the land and have been for more than 30 years when bylaws were passed in 1971.”
The hearing continues.
