Town stops for funeral of baby
Friday 16th November 2007, 1:46PM GMT.
The town of Welshpool came to a halt yesterday as a fairytale coach drawn by two white horses travelled slowly through the centre.
Residents and shoppers stood in silent tribute as one of the town’s youngest residents was taken to her final resting place.
Poppy Carol Robinson-Harding was 10 weeks old when she died on October 26, but her parents, Jenny and Winston, were determined her short life would not be forgotten.
The brave couple, who have two older children – Molly, five, and Alfie, two – have already started fundraising for the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital’s special care baby unit, where Poppy was cared for, and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) research.
Mourners at yesterday’s funeral in St Mary’s Church, Welshpool, many wearing pink buttonholes, pink ties and scarves, were among the first to contribute to the charities in memory of Poppy. The coach with its horses and attendants were provided by KC Horse Rescue, an animal rescue charity from Herefordshire.
Jenny said: “We wanted something special for Poppy. She was a princess and she deserved to go out in style.”
Family, friends and neighbours are already making plans for a number of fundraising events for the causes. They include Ceri Chapman tackling next year’s London Marathon in Poppy’s memory and, possibly, a cross-Channel swim.
