Group to protect countryside
Friday 9th November 2007, 11:40AM GMT.
A new group dedicated to protecting the countryside around a Shropshire landmark will be launched next month.
The Wrekin Forest Partnership will bring together councils, landowners, conservationists, user groups and the public.
Its aim is to ensure there is co-operation to ensure the area and its surroundings retain their special character and offer visitors a friendly welcome.
The partnership will be launched at a public meeting at Little Wenlock Village Hall on December 3, from 7-9pm.
The meeting, hosted by the All Friends Round the Wrekin, will also see the presentation of the Wrekin Forest Conservation Plan.
It follows more than a year of work by Pete Lambert, Wrekin Forest project officer for Shropshire Wildlife Trust, which owns the old Forest Glen site and acts as a go-between for the various landowners, councils and the public.
Mr Lambert said agreement had now been reached to form a partnership. One of the first tasks of the partnership will be to oversee completion of the project to improve visitor facilities around the Forest Glen.
This could involve a low-key visitor centre, cafe and toilets on the site of the closed and derelict toilet block at the entrance of the hill.
