How much do you pay for fuel?

Thursday 8th November 2007, 11:40AM GMT.

Petrol pricesThe price of petrol at the pumps has soared to a new high with motorists across Shropshire shocked at the hike.

We want to know how much YOU are paying for fuel. Add your details in the Comments box below and help us build up our online map.

AA figures have revealed the average cost of a litre of petrol is now 99.5p in stations across the country – but Shropshire prices are soaring over the average.

John Corbo, owner of the Ford Garage, near Shrewsbury, said small businesses in the county were at an increased risk because places like supermarkets were selling fuel at “uncompetitive prices” at a loss.

Click on the blue pins in the map above to see fuel prices reported by our online readers. Use the ‘minus’ button on the map to zoom out and see prices for other areas our visitors are reporting from, including Devon, Scotland and throughout the world, including Cyprus and Thailand.

Mr Corbo said: “The reason hypermarkets aren’t passing on all of the increases is because they can sell products at below cost and are pricing uncompetitively.

“It draws people on to their forecourts, adversely affecting small local businesses.

“There’s no way small businesses generally can compete when these big guys flex their muscles and trade uncompetitively.”

The average petrol price in the country now beats the previous record of 98.54p reached on August 1, 2006. Average diesel prices have also reached a record high at 102.45p a litre.

But according to www.petrolprices.com, a website which helps motorists find the cheapest fuel in their area, garages in Shrewsbury are charging up to 102.9p for petrol with stations in the Bridgnorth area charging up to 109.8p for diesel.

One Shropshire resident, who did not wish to be named, said the price at the Ford Garage had been going up and up over the last few days.

“It has crept up past the £1 mark then 101, 102 and now today its 104.9p,” he said.

“I have seen nothing in the news to explain why the price is so high at the pumps, it seems a ridiculous hike in prices.”

The 104.9p relates to diesel prices at Ford while its unleaded is priced at 100.9p.

A spokeswoman for BP, which supplies fuel to the Ford garage, said: “Firstly the cost of the raw product has increased dramatically. The cost of the crude price has also increased dramatically.

“This is due to several reasons including a shortage of the product internationally and international unrest which all play their part in the demand for the product on the open market.”

The highest costs:

According to www.petrolprices.com the highest prices of petrol and diesel in towns across Shropshire are:

Shrewsbury
Unleaded 102.9p; Diesel 106.9p

Ludlow
Unleaded 101.9p; Diesel 106.0p

Im sorry but even when the price of fuel is well down garages such as ford garage keep theres up .
It is all very well supporting small local business but how about local business giving a little back ???.
If i can fill up at asda , tesco and save some money then it is tough on local business such as ford garage they can compete if the want too .

But almost certainly dropping back to 42 cents by next week.
The main difference being that our government doesn’t tax us to the hilt like yours does on seemingly just about everything but the air that you breathe.

Why don’t the truck drivers have another blockade like in 2000?
Then the government would have to lower the taxes we pay on fuel!

    Not surprised

Every time I go for fuel it seems to have gone up (Ludlow) – so I no longer look at the price because public transport from rural areas into Ludlow is so awful that I just have to have fuel in my car.

I for one do try to use public transport, however:

1 The buses in Telfod barely run in the evenings or on Sundays

2 When the buses do run, the drivers seem so keen to get to their destination that they ignore the timetables – I was waiting 20 minutes for a bus last Saturday evening, when someone passing by told me that they had already seen it leave – obviously before I got to the bus stop – so it must have been between nearly 10 minutes earlier than the time on the timetable – this is a reasonably regular occurrence!

3 When you do finally catch a bus they look and smell as if they haven’t been cleaned in a week

These 3 issues need to be addressed before the majority of Telford people start using public transport particularly buses (although in honesty the trains are no better!0

Public transport… ahh yes, and with the rise in fuel costs means a rise in tickets for public transport so those extra costs can be covered! I filled up this afternoon here in Edinburgh and I paid 96.9p per litre for unleaded. I got that from Morrisons who curently are advertising “as they bought their petrol when prices were lower, they will be passing on those lower prices to their customers”. I believe this to an extent as they are currently between 4-6p a litre cheaper than everywhere else up here!

We are in Perth WA, it will be 38 degrees on Christmas Day, we do not expect snow.
We have a department who list prices at the petrol stations for the coming day, so you can rush in before the price goes up or wait for the price to go down, then go to the cheapest place on your daily trip.
