Continued support for initiatives
Wednesday 31st October 2007, 11:42AM GMT.
While we note the ongoing interest Mr Franklyn takes in Transforming Telford, I feel it is important to draw your attention to inaccuracies in his recent letter.
The “slap-up shindig” at the e-innovation Centre was, in reality, our provision of a roll-up display panel to demonstrate our support for the University of Wolverhampton e-innovation Centre’s official launch, which I’m sure readers will agree is very important for stimulating local enterprise.
Our continued support for such initiatives and, in particular, local business is vital for the local economy and the town as a place for people to live and work.
The views of the local residents are of equal importance, as demonstrated by the recent coverage in this newspaper about a public exhibition held to show local people our vision for the Southwater area, on November 8, 9 and 10.

I note with interest that Ms Raper fails to address the major concerns raised in John Franklyn’s letter – in particular the essentially undemocratic nature of “Transforming Telford”. Perhaps she could tell us why it was considered necessary, or even desirable, for the council to establish a “stand alone private limited company” to take over responsibility for a major portion of the council’s economic development policy making, and control of what are currently publicly owned assets.
The board of TT includes just two representatives of Telford & Wrekin Council – the Leader and CEO, with the rest being drawn from business and the usual suspects – Advantage West Midlands etc.
In its previous incarnation as “Telford First” it somehow managed to take part in the consultation over the future of the Town Park – some time before its creation was even officially PROPOSED to the council’s Cabinet. Obviously an organisation with considerable powers – some might say magical! I wonder if being immune to Freedom of Information requests is among them?

Without being perjorative to T&W Council, the vast majority of normal people welcome the addition of partnership working. The Council do not and never will have the resources to ‘Transform Telford’.
When money from the private sector begins to surge into Telford, I hope you and your like minded friend, Mr Franklyn, will acknowledge that the wishes of the majority matter, and not those of a group of people with a specific and negative agenda towards T&W Council and its’ partners.
The Brookside by-election will be quite telling. In the meantime, I will be at the Telford Shopping Centre on the 8th November to see the Christmas lights and to look at planning for the future of the town.
Incidentally, thus far, not one single planning application has been passed…

Thanks for that – you’ve put my mind at rest. Thank God there’s at least one person among us who knows what the vast majority of normal people think. I hope your endless interviewing doesn’t interfere too much with your day job!!

What a strange pen name…Oswestry…does this tell us that you live in Oswestry and just win in Telford. If so you obviously do not appreciate what the local people really want…it is not a vast fortune spending on Telford Centre just to turn it into a mini Birmingham…if you and your friend from Gobowen…again about 35 miles away…think that is what the “real” locals want then put it to a referendum…….

that should read “work in ” not “win”

Sorry Brian “Gobowen” was just trying to be ironic – I’m from Telford, and would suggest that “Oswestry” knows damn all about the “views of normal Telford people”

“When money from the private sector begins to surge into Telford,”
Is there any evidence to support the conjecture that private money WILL flood in? To date that seems to be more a pious hope. I’m not, unlike some on here, decrying private sector involvement but it seems strange to suggest that private money will flood in when it apparently needs public sector advance seeding to cause it to happen. In my experience the private sector is quite capable of investing in schemes with credible returns WITHOUT public start up funds. That the public sector has to invest first suggests that the business plan isn’t as solid as it is claimed. I’m not saying it couldn’t be but the supporting evidence, as yet, is not forthcoming

well said gobowen, perhaps oswestry lives in oswestry but works for t and w planning dept…they must be the only ones that agree with such ridiculous ideas

These are my points exactly.
£30 million public money of which £9million is match funding by Telford and Wrekin council.
This is on top of the initial £1.3million we as residents paid for the set up of TT and now the annual £1.1million per year the residents have to pay as any money TT may get, is NOT allowed tobe used for capital expenditure.
A heavy tax burden will be placed on the Residents to pay the £9 million match funding as well as loosing free facilities that will end up being pay as you use.
The poorest are the people who will be hit the hardest and they are the people that need the greatest assistance.

then put it to a referendum…….
Wouldn’t that be a huge waste of public money? Gordon Brown seems to think so!
I don’t work for the Council for TT but I pay Council Tax and am as entitled to an opinion as anybody else.
Don’t believe TT have published their concepts yet for the town. Let’s wait until then and for the views of the Council and private sector firms.
