BMX track officially opened

Monday 22nd October 2007, 11:45AM BST.

National 4X champion Alex Metcalfe, from Rotherham, on the new BMX track in MalinsleeA £50,000 BMX track – the largest in the Midlands – has been officially opened in Shropshire with dozens of riders showing off their skills.

The new track at Malinslee Playing Fields, Alma Avenue, Malinslee, in Telford, attracted youngsters from across the county on Saturday.

The riders showed off their skills with a host of demonstrations, in a bid to win prizes. Steve Jenks, one of Britain’s top professional BMX contractors, carried out the construction.

The youngsters themselves designed the tracks and trails.

The celebration event saw residents enjoy extreme trampolining, karting, a barbecue, a bouncy castle and entertainment from a DJ and disco.

The new facility offers a challenging course to cycle off road, both for BMX bikes and mountain bikes, and for riders of all ages.

Councillor Denis Allen, cabinet member for community services at Telford & Wrekin Council, which helped fund the track, said: “I am particularly pleased the council and a range of partners have been able to provide something which has been specifically requested by young people.

“We are now keen to host coaching activities at the site in partnership with local BMX club Wrekin Riders.

“As well as being great fun for young people, BMXing is an easy way for children to get fit and stay healthy.”

The track was opened following borough councillors’ decision to give the plans their approval in April last year.
