Canal plan is granted

Friday 12th October 2007, 6:30AM BST.

canal.jpgCampaigners hoping to restore the Shrewsbury & Newport Canal have won the go-ahead to transform wharf buildings into a canal museum and headquarters.

But they now face the challenge of gaining control of the site and obtaining the cash to put their plans into action.

Telford & Wrekin Council’s plans board gave unanimous backing for the plan involving disused Grade II-listed warehouses at Wappenshall, just north of the town.

The trust is now likely to enter negotiations with BJ Waters, which owns the site.
