1. Start at the Plough Inn, near to the level crossing in the village. This easy stroll is another from the series of Wren Heritage Walks which feature the countryside around the village of Weston Rhyn.

2. From the Plough, walk down to the level crossing, cross the railway and continue down to the bridge over the Shropshire Union Canal.

3. Cross the bridge and turn left on to the towpath and continue along this with the canal on your left as far as the next bridge (No 19), which is adjacent to the Poachers Pocket (see below).

4. Climb the steps to the lane, turn right along it and cross over the old A5 to a lane which passes to the left of some cottages.

5. Continue ahead under the new A5 and into a green lane which eventually ends at a T-junction. Turn right along this until its junction with a road next to Bryngwilla Lodge.

6. Turn left along the road, and at the crossroads turn right down the lane as far as the canal bridge. On reaching this, turn right on to the towpath, passing the new Lion Quays development on the opposite bank, before walking under the A5 again and continuing as far as bridge 18.

7. After passing under this, turn sharp right up to the road and right again to return to the start.

* Readers Chris and John Rose Johnhave commented: “We did this walk yesterday, 17th August 2008, and generally, found it very enjoyable.  We did, however, find the section between the Poachers Pocket and The Lodge rather disappointing as the ground cover and hedgerows were very overgrown, particularly with nettles.  We had to pick our way very carefully and were glad that we had not taken any of our small grandchildren with us on this occasion – we did enjoy following the skittish young pheasants though!

As the walk is such an easy one we decided to repeat the “Start to Poachers Pocket” section and continue straight on under the canal bridge along to the Chirk aquaduct where we were able to enjoy that wonderful valley view and which, on return to the car, took the total walk time to just over two hours. The canal walking was really lovely and there were loads of narrow boats passing with friendly people, many of whom were enjoying those “must have” aromatic sustenances, bacon butties!
