Llantysilio

Thursday 11th October 2007, 1:52PM BST.

1. Start at the parking area on the A542, one-and-a-half miles from Llangollen and near to Valle Crucis Abbey. Cross over road, turn left and walk across the field to the ruins of the abbey, which dates back to 1201.

2. Turn right down the drive of the caravan site, and where this bears left go straight ahead over a footbridge and climb the steps up a bank to another signpost.

Turn right here and follow the farm track out onto the road. Cross over, turn right for a short distance before turning left over the canal at the entrance to the motor museum.

3. Turn right along the canal, past the museum and the Chain Bridge Hotel until it ends at a pumping station.

4. Cross over the inlet and walk along the river past the impressive Horseshoe Falls, created by Thomas Telford in 1830 to divert water from the River Dee into the Shropshire Union canal system.

Follow the river for a short while, then continue up the bank to the church at Llantysilio.

5. Turn right, passing Llantysilio Green picnic site and, at a road junction on the left, follow the signposted path which skirts around the south-eastern slopes of Velvet Hill and gives panoramic views up the Vale of Llangollen with the ruins of Castell Dinas Bran on top of its hill.

6. At a path junction, bear right downhill, and right again over a stile, which leads directly down to the start of the walk.
