Boss ponders defensive change

Shrewsbury manager Gary Peters today continued to sift through the defensive wreckage which cost his side the chance to top League Two – and paved the way for changes for tomorrow night’s visit of Peterborough.
Peters wasted little time in allowing the dust to settle on Saturday’s shock home defeat to Rochdale as he addressed his players at training yesterday.
Town squandered their perfect home League record in spectacular fashion as they conceded three goals in the final nine minutes to allow a 2-1 lead to slip through their grasp.
And, while Peters is determined not to press the panic button, he has admitted a number of players will be sweating on their place in the team for the visit of Darren Ferguson’s big spenders tomorrow night.
“One of the things I said at the start of the season was that the hardest thing for our players to do would be to get into the team,” he said.
“Anyone who goes into the team and does not hit their top performance is under pressure and people have to understand that.
“You can’t have a free ride and if you have a bad game you have to face the consequences of your actions.
“Darren Moss trained yesterday and could probably have played on Saturday if we had needed him so there are no new injuries to report.
“Any changes tomorrow won’t be made through injuries and will be done to try and pick the right team to win this game.”
Peters admitted he was left baffled by the uncharacteristic errors from his defence in the final stages.
“The performance wasn’t like us and I struggled to recognise some of our players,” he added.
“When we were 2-1 up went pushing for the third goal all of the time and we should have tightened things up.
“It was ironic because I was just about to bring Danny Hall on for Marc Pugh when they made it 2-2.
“I have been given a hard time for not bringing Chris Humphrey on against Accrington and trying to kill the game off when they had 10 men but we won that game.
“Everyone had entertainment on Saturday but we didn’t get the three points.
“But the facts were we were within 10 minutes of going top of the table. We have had a bad 10 minutes and we have to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Perhaps we needed a bit of a wake up call. Rochdale won through muscle more than skill, but they kept their concentration right till the end.

I hope town learned a big lesson in what must be a very short period of time but very rewarding result for a team of 100% ers.
