Prison staff injured in rampage

Saturday 29th September 2007, 12:45PM BST.

police-at-stoke-2.jpgA six-hour riot which saw dozens of armed police officers called to restore order at a Shropshire youth custody centre left three prison staff injured.

Police were sent to Stoke Heath Young Offenders’ Institution, near Market Drayton, last night after inmates took control of a wing.

Three prison officers suffered cuts and bruises with two needing hospital treatment after trouble broke out at 7.30pm.

A prison service spokeswoman said today: “Prisoners on one wing of HMP Stoke Heath were involved last night in an incident of concerted indiscipline beginning at 7.30pm. Specialist staff were deployed and restored order at 1.30am.

“The wing has sustained significant damage.”

The incident comes nearly a year after £175,500 of damage was caused in a nine-hour riot at the centre, which houses more than 600 young men aged 15 to 21.

Operations manager Andy Hayes today said inmates took control of an association room – an area where they spend free time.

He said: “What happened was similar to what happened on A wing about 12 months ago. A few lads started a fight, turned on the staff and took over the association room.”

People in Stoke Heath last night described hearing noises coming from the jail.

Kelly Ellerton heard sirens as the police arrived. She said: “There was a lot of noise and I wondered what was going on.”

The incident comes just weeks after a damning report from the chief prison inspector claimed the institution was failing to meet standards in most criteria, and inmates were locked up for too long each day in poor conditions.

If ever there was a case for bringing back corporal punishment for serious acts of indiscipline and violence whilst in custody – this is it. A good thrashing – like they would have got not to many years ago would soon curb their enthusiasm for this behaviour. They will possibly get a couple of days loss of remission and then be in a mood to do it again.

More than likely caused after the wireless broadband connection failed in their penthouse suites or the Sky TV had a malfunction halfway through The Simpsons; if not obviously mum forgot to breastfeed them which no doubt they will then blame societies failure and nothing at all to do with the little darlings being incarcerated by the evil courts.

There will be another enquiry that will point the finger at everyone, apart from the little cherubs who were causing the trouble.

Ah bless them they must be bored.

They need to ask themselves why they are there in the first place.

this will be the first of many riots due to overcrowding, understaffing, underfunding and too many foreign prisoners because of government policy, and by mostly misguided fools.

I cannot believe this, yet again we are faced with severe disruption within Stoke Heath. Were no lessons learned from last years riots at this Prison? Are management there using staff as pawns? This is absolutaley disgraceful, they were right to strike and should do again!

yeah Alan, let’s beat people until they’re black and blue – that’ll teach them how to be responsible adults won’t it.

Alan is exactly right although he probably does not go far enough.

When are we going to stop cow towing to the liberalist view on instilling discipline in our prisons.

It is high time that prisoners were left to wallow in the cesspit of their own making following these events.

However preferable discipline should be enforced harshly and overwhelmingly to stop these situations getting out of hand as this one clearly did. Any dissent or seditious behaviour should be met with extreme brutality. Crushed from the outset, the instigators and followers would be made to toe the line. A violent and malevolent course of action indeed but it would only need to be used on a few occasions before incidents such as these would be banished into obscurity.

Prisons should become places where these underclasses fear and not the
den of idleness and sanctuary from real life they are.

Why do the media always say POLICE OFFICERS restored order when even I know that the teams that restored order were Prison Officers (under paid for what they have to put up with) and I hope they inflicted some well deserved pain on the poor little baby burglars

Alan is right, there is no longer a deterent.

No doubt the liberals will blame the ‘harsh regime’ for their behaviour, it is the distinct lack of a ‘harsh regime’ that has caused the problem.

Order must be restored and strong discipline implemented as quickly as possible.
If the authority is seen to be weak (PC) then the inmates will take advantage, just as in society in general.
I agree entirely with Alan. Corpral punishment must be re-introduced or we are facing anarchy.

Alan is absolutely right. Those involved will get a period of ‘loss’ with regards to the privaliges that they have. They may get the concerted indiscipline, or something by another name, as a charge against them? It will indeed be interesting to see a; how many recieve another punishment through the courts and b; how substantial that punishment is. I use punishment when i should be using the word sentence!
Prison is no longer a deterent!!! look at the s.star article where the report on stoke heath was given! inmates spend to much time in cell!? So What! the government and other do gooders need to come down to the prison shop floor and see just how much these inmates get away with! the majority do not have a problem with ‘doing time’, I tell you now, after the riot in 06 the damaged wing, as well as other areas of the prison were re furbished with plasma tv’s, leather seats, shiney new areas for dinning and associating. Those with the purse strings and the makers of the policies need to take a long hard look at our prison service and ask why these types of incidents happen! My subjective knowledge tells me one thing, prisons are far to soft!
one example, how can forcing prison officers to wear ‘softer uniform’ (polo shirts instead of black and white uniform) and calling the inmates by the first name, how can that possibly help to instill control, respect from the inmates and maintain a clear boundry between officers and inmates. Answer, the powers that be are trying to change officers in to carers!! It wont work!!!! Clear boundaries and discipline have to come first, it is basic common sense!!

But Alan, what about their human rights? They were just expressing their outrage and dissatisfaction as all other avenues were denied to them. Clearly a study must be done into the cause and a comitee should be set up to investigate… Or maybe spare the taxpayer more expense and just give them a good thrashing!

Hey, politicians and apologists, just look at the difference of opinion between real people posting here and your wishy-washy liberal fantasies that have brought this country down by pandering to criminals and persecuting the law-abiding majority!

I’m a BNP member as many here are aware, but these folks for the most part are not, so no need for the usual lefty suspects to make silly remarks about them. They are good people who simply want what they believe is best for us all.

Take note you politicians and liberal apologists.
The people are saying what they really feel and know to be right.
Either do what our people want you to do or step aside for those that will!

Arthue speaks for many people with his wise words but I fear the days of politicians listening to the people are gone, if they were ever here.

Only one political party has the desire to implement the will of the people and unless people are prepared to change their voting habits and elect candidates from the BNP they shouldn’t complain when lawlessness thrives.

Market Drayton has alot to be proud of, so hopefully residents will concentrate on positive events their home town rather than the events in this article.
