Restoration may take years

A £600,000 scheme to restore an historic building in a Shropshire town might not be completed for another two years.
Initial plans for the restoration of Bishop’s Castle Town Hall were unveiled in 2004. However, a community leader today said the scheme is unlikely to be completed before 2009.
Jane Carroll, the town’s former mayor, said: “We are making progress, but there is still a lot to do. I would imagine it will be between 18 months and two years before we see it done.”
Mrs Carroll said the Bishop’s Castle Town Hall Renovation Partnership had been launched to oversee the project.
She said the group hoped to secure a project planning grant early in the new year. After that, it would be in a position to apply for Heritage Lottery funding towards the overall cost of the scheme.
Mrs Carroll said the scheme was important to local people because the hall was a centrepoint for Bishop’s Castle.
“We want to make the building more accessible to more people,” she said. “We need to work out whether the building can be put to more community uses.”
Town councillors drew up a £600,000 plan for improvements in 2004, but failed to secure Heritage Lottery funding.
