Town eye winning ways
Friday 21st September 2007, 1:00PM BST.
Upbeat boss Gary Peters insists it is only a matter of time before Shrewsbury Town break their winning duck at Wycombe Wanderers.
Town head to Adams Park tomorrow looking for their first victory at the home of the Chairboys, having drawn three and lost four of their seven previous visits.
Wanderers will be confident of making Shrewsbury wait at least another year as they go into the game on the back of three consecutive wins that have lifted them up the League Two table.
But Peters insisted: “The fact that we’ve never won at Wycombe in seven outings means that at some stage we’re going to win.
With things like this, every time you don’t win it just brings you closer to the time when you do.
“Things like this only excite me because it means there has to be a good chance of us winning.”
Peters is not underestimating the Buckinghamshire outfit, who he backs to launch a sustained promotion challenge over the coming months.
Manager Paul Lambert has attacking talent including in-demand Jermaine Easter as well as John Sutton, brother of former Chelsea ace Chris, and Scott McGleish.
Goalkeeper Scott Shearer, who spent much of last season on loan at Shrewsbury from Bristol Rovers, is also in the Wanderers squad – but has had to settle for a place on the bench in recent games.
“They’re going to be up there,” the Town chief said. “They’re one of the teams that people would have fancied at the beginning of the season.
“I’m not surprised they’ve started winning now. They’ve got people like Sutton, who was a top goalscorer in Scotland last year and McGleish and Easter too. Jermaine Easter is going to be a goalscorer wherever he goes. The sooner he goes, the better – but he’s still there at the moment so we will just have to deal with him.”
The date of Town’s two reserve games with Oldham Athletic in the Pontin’s League have been switched.
The Latics’ second string will now visit Shrewsbury’s new stadium on Oteley Road on Monday, kick-off at 2pm.
The return fixture at Boundary Park will be played on Monday, January 14, also at 2pm.
