Rider’s wheelie seen by officers

taking-notes.jpgA daredevil biker who pulled a wheelie down one of Shrewsbury’s busiest roads has appeared in court – after being spotted by police officers who had just left a meeting discussing poor driving standards.

Peter Walker, 26, of Round Hill Green, in Coton Hill, was seen performing his stunt by four police officers as he rode down Smithfield Road at about 9.30pm on April 3.

The officers were walking over Frankwell footbridge having just left a Partners and Communities Together meeting at the Guildhall discussing speeding and bad driving practices around the town centre.

Walker, who admitted a charge of careless driving when he appeared at Shrewsbury Magistrates Court yesterday, was fined £120 and ordered to pay £60 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. He also had his driving licence endorsed with five penalty points.

Mrs Kate Price, prosecuting, said Constable Dave Walton had seen Walker riding his Honda bike at around 40mph down the middle lane of Smithfield Road.

She said: “The incident occurred at 9.30pm after the four officers had attended a PACT meeting to discuss anti-social driving and speeding vehicles with councillors and residents.

“The rider was pulling a wheelie. The defendant admitted pulling the stunt and told officers he had been ‘a bit of a muppet’.”

Walker, who represented himself, said he had pulled off similar stunts on closed roads and said he had made a “bad call of judgement”.

Is pulling a wheelie dangerous? You can be pretty sure that the rider is experienced and had thorough control of the bike to perform such a stunt (Wheelies are not easy!)

What a load of cobblers you are talking! That bike was not in full and total control by the rider. I’ve had 33 years experience of riding road bikes and I can still pull a wheelie but you are not in full and proper control of the bike. Wheelies are for track days NOT town centre roads! Stunts should not be done on public roads!

The rider in not in full control of the bike. I did know a rider who pulled a wheelie at slow speed, lost control, hit a post and unfortunately died.

Idiots like him cause the majority of us bikers to suffer from unfair prejudice from the law and the car driving public.
It only helps to justify the oppresive stance of people like Robert Brunstrome of North Wales police towards motorcyclists.
Maybe 12 months catching the bus will focus his mind.

Why do people Wheelie? Is it to show off or what?

If I ever pulled a wheelie on a motor be assured the bike would be on top of me! Would be funny to watch for the neutrals but not me! ;-)

Oh I see the self-righteous have not commented on the other current motorcycle related news story on this site. Seems a ‘wheelie’ is more important than a death caused by a 4 wheeled motorist…?

Good point Macca. I have never pulled a wheelie on the road, and when I do intend to learn how to do it there are well organised training events in safe track environments. The track is where wheelies and excessive speed should be kept.

    Pete Walker (the guilty pratt)

Right, well glad there’s so many perfect riders out there who’ve obviously never speeded or done suomething on there bike or car that they feel stupid about!!! Yes i did a stupid thing, but it was an act i am completely confident in my ability to do,it was as i said in court a bad judgement and not something i had done all the time and givin us bikers a bad name! i have been a biker for 7 years now with a full clean license for 6 years,so i made a mistake, any of the commenters on here never made one of them?? I got what i deserved,i admitted it and didnt try to avoid my penalty because i kno i made a mistake!!unlike the pratt in his corsa who knocked me off couple years back and fled jumpin 2 red lights, punishment, advanced driving lessons and a fine!!! but its ok,he’s not an antisocial biker so it was probably my fault!!
