Gunnell pots a winning start
Friday 21st September 2007, 12:25PM BST.
Shropshire’s Adrian Gunnell has launched his bid to qualify for the final stages of the Royal London Watches Grand Prix with a 4-3 victory over Alan McManus at Prestatyn.
It is the first of six matches in just 72 hours for Gunnell, as he competes in a seven-man round-robin format.
Victory over former World Championship semi-finalist McManus has got the Telford potter off to the perfect start, but he now faces matches against Paul Davies, Ian Preece, Lee Walker, Tian Pengfei, Liu Chuang and Fraser Patrick over the next three days.
The top two in the group will then qualify for the main tournament at Aberdeen next month.
Gunnell missed out on a place in the final stages last year despite winning five out of seven group matches.
