Stadium ‘could lift visitors’
Friday 14th September 2007, 11:56AM BST.
Shrewsbury boss Gary Peters expects opponents Accrington Stanley to raise their game to new heights in the relative luxury of Town’s posh new stadium tomorrow. The Lancashire men are not fancied by many people to be a big threat in League Two this year – but Peters believes they will be inspired by the shiny surroundings.
Stanley play at The Fraser Eagle Stadium, a ground which is a world away from what they will find when they arrive on Oteley Road.
“It’s a nice place to come and play for them and they’re definitely going to be up for it.” the Town chief declared.
“It will be a big lift for them and we’ve got to make sure that lift is neutralised by the fact that we love playing here and we want to win as many games as we can.
“At Accrington the changing rooms are a Portakabin, it’s a poor pitch and the floodlights aren’t the best.
“They’ll get good treatment and good facilities here and they’ve just got to make sure they don’t enjoy it too much. I’m sure it will help them to raise their game and we have to be ready.”
Stanley arrive with the confidence boost of having thrashed Grimsby 4-1 in their last outing, inflicting the second defeat of the season on the Mariners, who lost 2-1 at Shrewsbury two weeks ago.
That impressive victory has propelled them into midtable, though Peters is not reading too much into the result.
“I don’t know that Grimsby played that well,” he said. “Their manager (Alan Buckley) was talking about how badly they played.
“It was a good result for them, but we’ll just have to see what they’re like this week and deal with it.”
Meanwhile, midfielder David Hunt will be in the squad for tomorrow’s clash despite becoming a father yesterday.
Hunt missed training yesterday to be with his partner, but was due to report for duty as normal for the match.
Peters was in jovial mood as he broke the news of the former Northampton man’s new arrival, declaring: “I don’t think players should be allowed to have babies on Wednesday as it affects our preparation – wives need to be more considerate.
“I think we’ll make that a new rule at the club. Babies can only be born on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during the season.”
