Janet KempsonA mother-of-one seriously hurt in a motorbike crash which killed her husband has spoken for the first time about the tragedy.Janet Kempson was in hospital for nearly three months following the crash at Cold Hatton in May.

Now recovering at her father’s home, she is walking again and said she hoped to return to her Telford home by the end of the month and eventually back to work.

Mrs Kempson was riding pillion on her husband Andrew’s motorbike when it was involved in a collision with a car outside the Seven Stars pub on the A442 in Cold Hatton on May 3.

Mr Kempson, a 49-year-old sales manager, died from multiple injuries, while Mrs Kempson suffered serious pelvic and back injuries. More than 200 people packed into Telford Crematorium for Mr Kempson’s funeral, which was delayed by more than three months until his wife was well enough to attend.

The accident happened when the Kempsons, riding a blue Yamaha Phaser towards Telford, collided with a grey Vauxhall Omega travelling in the opposite direction.

An inquest, opened in May, heard the bike exploded after hitting the car.

Michael Gwynne, Telford & Wrekin coroner, adjourned the inquest until police investigations are completed.

Mrs Kempson is fighting to come to terms with what has happened to her over the past few months.Janet Kempson and husband AndyAlthough her road to recovery is a slow one, she is now walking again and hopes to return to her Telford home by the end of the month; eventually she wants to get back to work as a charity welfare officer.

Four months on, after spending weeks in hospital and undergoing hours of physiotherapy, the mother-of-one has spoken of her progress. The first she heard about the accident was when she gained consciousness in Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital.

“I don’t remember anything until I came around in Accident and Emergency,” she said. “Apparently I came off the back and landed several feet up the road. I had two fractures to the left side of my pelvis and cracked my back.

“I was flat on my back and could not move for six-and-a-half weeks.

“I’m still having physiotherapy. I’m not too bad injury wise, it’s just coming to terms with everything.”

She was discharged from hospital in mid-July for her husband’s funeral, which had been delayed for 14 weeks to allow her to attend.

Telford Crematorium was packed for the service on August 9, with more than 200 people in attendance.

Mrs Kempson said her family, including 31-year-old son Andrew, who lives in Worcester, had given her “marvellous” support.

She said her recovery had been boosted by generous donations from friends’ and family members. She has decided to give this money to a cause that was close to her husband’s heart.

She will be handing over £3,000 to the County Air Ambulance at a presentation on October 5 – what would have been Mr Kempson’s 50th birthday.

“The donation is bigger than I anticipated,” Mrs Kempson said. “Because my husband and I both drove a lot, for my job and because we were bikers, we always felt the air ambulance should be supported.”

She feels the amount collected shows how highly-respected her husband was.

“Andy was a very well liked, jolly person,” she said. “He seemed to have quite a bearing on a lot of people and their lives.”
