Peters backs Garner for a cap

Shrewsbury Town’s Glyn GarnerGary Peters today hailed Glyn Garner’s start to his Shrewsbury Town career – and admitted the goalkeeper’s form may soon attract the attention of the Welsh international set-up.

Garner has been in inspirational form since arriving from Leyton Orient during the summer and produced another outstanding display to preserve a precious point for his side at Stockport on Saturday.

Peters believes it’s not out of the question that Garner – who is expected to overcome a minor knee problem for this weekend’s visit of Accrington Stanley – could add to his sole international cap which came in a friendly against Trinidad & Tobago in May 2006.

“Glyn has done everything I thought he would do,” said Peters. “As soon as I knew Joe Hart was going to leave, he was the first keeper I went for.

“We couldn’t get him straight away but a year down the line we got our man and I couldn’t be happier.

“I thought he was the best goalkeeper in our division and the best in the division above when he went up there.

“I’m sure if the Welsh people came and watched him play they would definitely be interested – but I just want him to keep doing well for Shrewsbury.”

The future of another goalkeeper, Ryan Esson, does – for the time being – appears to be with Shrewsbury.

The Scot was made available for transfer by Peters in the summer following the arrival of Garner.

But, despite some interest from Leeds, the custodian’s agent thinks Esson will remain with Town, for the short-term at least.

“Ryan’s keeping his head down and working hard in training,” said Justin Page.

“He was on the Leeds short-list when they were looking for a loan goalkeeper but nothing came of it and Scottish clubs aren’t allowed to do any transfers until January.”
