Residents will fight schemes

development.jpgElderly and sick residents in Shifnal have vowed to fight housing bosses who say their homes could be bulldozed for a new development.

Plans have been revealed to redevelop Yew Tree Court, a sheltered housing block in need of repairs.

But residents living in the nearby warden-controlled bungalows, The Grove, have been shocked to learn their homes could be flattened as part of the scheme.

Consultation is currently taking place on three options, one involving the demolition of all sheltered accommodation on the site, including The Grove bungalows, and the creation of 55 new homes.

The other options, developed by South Staffordshire Housing Association in conjunction with Bridgnorth District Council, do not affect The Grove, but involve knocking down part or all of Yew Tree Court and and adding new homes and community facilities.

Distraught resident Ted Cross, 81, who is terminally ill with cancer, said. “It’s just ridiculous knocking a dwelling down like this. They are only 26 years old.”

His wife, Meg, 77, said: “We thought we were going to end our days here.

“We love it here and they’re just going to uproot us.”

Steve Gregg, the council’s housing service manager, said it was looking at developing the area into a large sheltered housing “hub” in association with the housing trust and that consultations were ongoing.
