A Shropshire school which is unable to give its pupils proper physical education because of its poor facilities is hoping to build a sports hall, fitness suite and community meeting rooms.

Shropshire County Council has recommended the plans at Church Stretton Secondary School, on Shrewsbury Road, for approval.

The school hopes to build a four-court sports hall, changing rooms, a fitness suite, dance studio, community meeting rooms, reception area and storage facilities and car park.

A report, which is due to go before the planning committee this week, says: “The proposed development is desirable in that the construction of the four-court sports hall would address the current deficiencies in indoor sporting facilities at the school, which prevent the full curriculum of sports and PE being provided.”

The planning proposal says the school lacks a sports hall of modern standards and the new facilities would be used primarily during school hours but would be available for use by the community at other times.

The school lies within the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the plans are within the development limits laid out by the South Shropshire Local Plan.

The county council have recommended the plans be granted permission with a lengthy list of conditions.

These include time restrictions on the when the sports hall can be used, a landscaping scheme with new trees and hedges to be implemented and maintained, a programme of wildlife and habitat protection to be carried out, various highways and traffic conditions and the council want to see all building materials to be approved.
