Woman pleads guilty over death

A Shropshire pensioner pleaded guilty at crown court today to causing the death of a Telford baker in a supermarket car park by dangerous driving.Patricia Taylor, of High Street, Wellington, was driving in the car park of Asda, St Georges Road, Donnington Wood, on August 22 last year when she hit pedestrian Michael Griffiths.
Mr Griffiths, 43, of Trenleigh Gardens, Trench, who had worked at bakery AJ Rowe in Hadley since leaving school, suffered serious head injuries. He was taken to Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital, where he died four days later.
Taylor, 64, suffered chest and facial injuries and had to be cut free from the vehicle.
She admitted at Shrewsbury Crown Court causing the death of Mr Griffiths by dangerous driving.
The court heard a medical report showed Taylor, who previously had had her driving licence suspended due to a medical condition, was fit to drive at the time of the incident.
Sentencing was adjourned to a date to be fixed for reports and Taylor was released on bail.
At Mr Griffiths’s inquest, which opened in May, a pathologist said the father-of-two suffered such severe damage to his brain he would never have survived.
A post-mortem examination also showed he had cuts and bruises and a fractured collar bone.
The inquest heard Taylor had turned into a “dead-end parking bay” and her vehicle had then collided with Mr Griffiths.
Michael Gwynne, Telford & Wrekin coroner, paid tribute to the way in which Mr Griffiths had given the gift of life to others by donating his organs.
The inquest was adjourned until after the court hearing.
