Visit cut plan to fight MRSA
Thursday 6th September 2007, 12:19PM BST.
Health chiefs at Shropshire’s two main hospitals are looking at reducing the number of bedside visitors in a bid to control the spread of the MRSA superbug and other infections.Trish Rowson, deputy chief executive of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust, said it was considering a return to the old policy of having no more than two visitors per bed.
She also said nurses and other staff faced disciplinary action if they failed to cover up their uniforms when they left work or were seen in public places wearing them.
Recently a nurse was disciplined for breaching this rule.
Mrs Rowson said there were no facilities at the hospitals for laundering uniforms but staff were given advice on how to wash them properly at home.
She was responding yesterday to questions from the county council’s watchdog health overview and scrutiny panel.
Mrs Rowson together with Debbie Shaw, the trust’s director of strategy, updated members on the action being taken to tackle the problem.
Mrs Shaw said the trust was one of very few to have implemented a staff screening programme.
At present certain groups of patients are screened, such as renal and oncology, but consideration is being given to extending it.
The target is to cut the number of MRSA cases to 23. Since April 16 cases have been reported.
The panel agreed to “strongly recommend” the trust to take further action to cut visitor numbers.

returning back to basics – pity it was’nt thought of before – and also staff facing disciplinary action if they fail to cover up their uniforms or are out seen wearing in them in public places – lets hope Shrewsbury & Telford stick to their guns on this and also provide changing facilities for their staff to ensure this can happen

You can only have 2 at a time as it is, but it is not enforced.
If cleaning regimes were enforced, with Doctors and others following the rules, this would have a greater effect.
You very often see doctors going from bed to bed and not cleaning in between times.

My father died after catching MRSA in the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford 12 years ago. It is an absolute disgrace that the problem of MRSA is still prevalent. Those in charge of the said hospital should be ashamed.

After a vist in the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford I found what the hospital needs is a dam good clean. This would be good start to prevent the MRSA. After all with the money for the parking you would think they should be able afford a few good cleaners.

I was under the impression that all nursing staff should wash their hands after dealing with each patient. Their shpuld be a wash basin with antiseptic wash in each ward so there is no excuse.
Limiting the number of visitors to each bed is abrogating blame and the blame lies with the staff not the visitors.
