Cygnet with RSPCA
Saturday 1st September 2007, 9:07AM BST.
A baby swan had to be rescued from a Telford pond after it got fishing tackle stuck down its throat.
Firefighters used an inflatable walkway to get to the cygnet, before it was captured in a net and taken out of the water.
Crews from Telford Central and Wellington fire stations spent about an hour and a half on scene yesterday with RSPCA representatives.
Sub-officer Mark Weaver, from Telford Central, said the cygnet had been weak when it was rescued and had been taken away by the RSPCA to be treated and looked after.
“We had a call at about 6pm to go to Stirchley Pools where the RSPCA had got a cygnet in distress with fishing tackle down its throat,” he said. “It hadn’t eaten for 36 hours so they were a bit worried about it.
“We deployed a rescue path from the rescue tender in Wellington. It’s like an inflatable walkway.
“We pushed it to another pool, snared it in a net and got it out.
“It was quite weak and a bit subdued. The RSPCA took it away and said they’ll sort it out and they’ll release it.”
Mr Weaver said the job was an unusual one, which firefighters might be called to do just three or four times during their career.
“We do get animal rescues quite often. This one was a bit awkward but normally they are straightforward,” he added.
