County MP moved by Di tribute

Saturday 1st September 2007, 9:20AM BST.

Shropshire was represented at yesterday’s memorial service in London by the High Sheriff, Mrs Meriel Afia, and her husband, Peter.

A magnificent rose display provided by David Austin Roses, of Albrighton, framed the choir arch in the Guards Chapel.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife, Sarah, attended, sitting next to former Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife, Cherie, and Sir John Major and Lady Major.Ludlow MP Philip Dunne was the only other serving MP present, attending with his wife, Domenica.

He said of the service: “It was a fitting way for the two princes to commemorate their mother’s life.

“Prince Harry gave a moving tribute, speaking confidently from the heart about the loss of a parent, as only those who have suffered such a tragedy could.

“Both he and the Bishop of London, in his powerful address celebrating Princess Diana’s work, made the plea for this to be the end of media intrusion and speculation, so she can be remembered for the positive strengths she showed in her attitude to others and for making people happy.”
