Travellers on car park

Friday 31st August 2007, 10:20AM BST.

A group of travellers who left an illegal encampment near Ludlow said today they did so to save a Shropshire farmer from a possible £20,000 fine.

Seven families left Tom Evans’s Oakery farm, at Richards Castle, on Monday, after South Shropshire District Council threatened legal action.

Mr Evans could have faced fines of £20,000.

Today the group was on the town’s leisure centre car park. Zoe Smith, Phil Massey and Justin Hemmings said they had moved because they did not want Mr Evans to be fined.
