Striker to learn his Town future
Thursday 30th August 2007, 11:23AM BST.
Big striker Fola Onibuje’s Shrewsbury Town future will be decided in the next 24 hours – but Gary Peters was reporting no other business before the transfer window closes.Onibuje has been on a short-term deal with Town since arriving on trial in pre-season, and has featured in the Carling Cup clashes with Colchester and Fulham.
Peters is keen to let him know his fate before the transfer window for permanent deals shuts tomorrow night.
“We need to let him know because if I left it past the deadline then morally I’d have to sign him because he couldn’t play for anyone else until January,” the Town chief revealed.
“It would be unfair to keep him until next week and then say we’re letting him go. We’ll sit down and talk and it will be sorted out.”
Whether Onibuje stays or not, Peters has made it clear there will be no further additions as he does not want to disrupt the team spirit he has created.
“We’ve got a good squad of players, and when they’re all fit they’re going to be a match for anyone,” he said.
“I don’t want to mess about with that. They’re such a good mix that I wouldn’t want anyone to come in here and change the make up of the players.
“We’ve got one or two experienced players dotted around and bags of young talent.
“No-one will be leaving anyway – no-one’s got enough money to buy any of my players.”
Meanwhile, Shrewsbury’s reserves lost 4-0 at Bradford City last night in the Pontin’s Holiday League – though that hardly tells the whole story.
Town sent a complete youth team for the game, except for goalkeeper coach Chris Mackenzie, as many of their regular reserves had been in Carling Cup action the night before.
“We couldn’t send the usual reserve side because they’d all played against Premier League opposition on Tuesday (in the 1-0 defeat to Fulham),” added Peters.
“There was no-one else to play. Reserve team results are unimportant to me – the only thing that really matters to me is the league.”
