Rogers sets sights on Test spot
Thursday 30th August 2007, 11:16AM BST.
Former Wellington professional Chris Rogers is hoping to finally get the chance to open the batting for Australia. The left-hander is one of the leading candidtates to replace the retired Justin Langer at the top of the order.
Rogers helped the Orleton Park club win the Birmingham League Premier Division title for the first time in 2003.
Since then he has played county cricket for Derbyshire and Northamptonshire while continuing to star for Western Australia.
He was last season’s state cricketer of the year after crashing a season-high 1202 Pura Cup runs for Western Australia at an average of 70.71.
He will be vying for the opening role with Phil Jacques – and possibly Shane Watson and Mike Hussey.
Rogers, who turns 30 later this week, said he was in the best form of his career and maintains it is time he finally tested himself at the highest level.
“I had a good season last year and I think I’m playing as well as I ever have,” he said.
“I’m getting to 30 this week so hopefully I’m ready, and if I’m not ready now I never will be.”
The vying pair will also have the opportunity to push their claims when they tour Pakistan with the Australia ‘A’ side early next month.

I for one like to know how players who’ve starred in our local teams are progressing, especially if like Chris they may get a chance to represent thier country.

I totally agree with comment no1 this does not deserve a headline and it shocks me that this article gets a headline and Oswestry’s title success in the SHROPSHIRE PREMIER LEAGUE does not!!!

Chris Rogers has a long way to go before representing his country.

John Westwood – Are you sure you logged onto the right page?? Looks like you really know your cricket – after your ridiculous comment above!!! If he hadn’t of been taken straight from the WACA for Surgery 10 days before the November test series he would of made his Test debut – Now, depending on Hayden’s injury he is just 4 days away from his introduction to test cricket – that doesn’t sound a long way from representing his country to me??!! Try commenting on a different page like darts or snooker – you might have a bit more to offer!!!!
