Job losses after refusal

The owner of a Shropshire hotel has said it will have to close with the loss of more than 20 jobs after planning permission for a marquee to remain at the venue was refused.
North Shropshire District Council yesterday rejected permission for the marquee to remain at Tern Hill Hotel, Market Drayton, saying the drainage system would be unable to cope with the extra people a marquee would generate.
The marquee, which can accommodate an extra 350 people at the 12-bedroom hotel, has been a feature at the hotel since 1989, but permission for it to remain expired in April.
The issue of inadequate drainage was raised this year after the Environment Agency registered an objection to the latest application for planning permission for the marquee to remain.
Anne-Marie Brennan, hotel owner, said, without the marquee, the business would have to be closed, with the loss of 21 jobs.
Councillor Jean Mainwaring said: “Last time we granted permission we definitely said it would be the last time, so I am going to say we should refuse it.”
