Funeral date for councillor
Thursday 30th August 2007, 5:45AM BST.
The funeral of a long-serving Shropshire councillor who died last week while on holiday will be held this Saturday, his family have said.
Councillor Roy Lane, 68, died last Friday in Wales. His wife Judy said his funeral will take place at Broseley Parish Church, at 11am on Saturday. It will be followed by a reception at Victoria Hall.
Members of both Bridgnorth District Council and Broseley Town Council will attend the service.
Councillor Lane, who was honoured with an MBE in 2002 for his work with local government and the community, had served as a councillor for 40 years.
Mayor of Broseley, Councillor Ian Pickles, today said: “As many town councillors as possible will be at the service. Judy has asked us to go as friends and colleagues of Roy, rather than as representatives of the council.
“We will also have a pause to reflect at the start of our next meeting on September 11. Roy has done so much for Broseley. He will be sorely missed.”
Councillor Pickles said a ploughman’s lunch due to take place at Victoria hall on Saturday in aid of the County Air Ambulance – a charity Mr Lane supported – had been postponed.
It will now take place on September 8 from 12pm to 2pm.
He said: “Roy was a big supporter of the County Air Ambulance and had been going to volunteer at the event. He would want us to carry on with it.”
Councillor Lane was a former trustee of the Lady Forrester Daycare and Residential Centre in Broseley. He joined the district council in 1974 clocking up 33 years’ service after first being elected as a parish councillor in 1967.
