Cash plan for work on land

Thursday 30th August 2007, 5:44AM BST.

greenbeans.jpgShrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council could give £40,000 to finance work on eight gardens in a Shropshire village which are contaminated with lead and arsenic.

Officers have asked the cabinet to finance preparatory work to deal with the land at the site of the former lead smelting works at Minsterley Road, Pontesbury.

Enviros Environmental Consultants conducted a survey on behalf of the council which showed eight homes were affected.

This is fewer than originally thought when a large number of villagers were told not to eat home-grown vegetables.

The problem came to light when the council carried out a review of previous uses of land within the borough.

A report, which cabinet members will consider at their meeting on Monday, states determination notices were then served on the property owners.

Officers state the next step is to carry out remedial work and assess all the options, including a survey of the site and design work.

surely these home owners had surveys done before they bought their homes, they will get massive increases in their house prices as the tax payer foots the bill to de pollute their gardens, surely this is not right, they should pay for it themselves, that or just slab the garden and grow things in pots, it really gets by goat that i as a tax payer should have to pay for them to have a landscape gardener come in and refurbish their garden free of charge! Outrageous
