Cash on offer after floods

Thursday 30th August 2007, 10:47AM BST.

A £23,000 flood recovery fund has been set up for people in Telford & Wrekin hit by the summer storms, it was announced today. Application forms are being sent out to areas known to be affected.

Telford & Wrekin Council has been awarded the money by the Government and is targeting those who had water enter their homes.

Payments will be treated as a priority and made within weeks of requests being approved. All the money is expected to be handed out by October 5.

Councillor Jacqui Seymour, cabinet member for adult and consumer care, said: “The money allocated by central Government will go directly to those households and residents hardest hit by the flooding.

“We have established criteria to ensure this money is distributed fairly and will look at all claims where the floodwater has affected the living area of any home.

“We hope this one-off payment will go some way to improve the situation for those homes in the borough damaged most by floods.”

David Morgan, council spokesman, said: “Officers have now finalised the scheme to ensure the money is fairly distributed to those eligible to receive assistance.”

People who have been flooded but not received forms should phone (01952) 381960 for details.

Mr Morgan said: “It is anticipated, in these cases, payments will be made within four weeks following receipt of a completed application.”
