Baseball bat terror for shoppers

Thursday 30th August 2007, 10:49AM BST.

Two men brandishing baseball bats forced shoppers to flee when they attacked a car in a busy Telford street, injuring a young woman.

The Vauxhall Astra was stopped by a Nissan Micra in Market Street, Wellington, before two men jumped out and attacked the car with the bats.

A girl inside the Micra screamed as she was showered in glass. The men are believed to have got back into their vehicle and made their escape.

The girl inside the damaged car needed hospital treatment for cuts suffered in the attack.

A man in his mid to late 20s was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and assault and later released on bail.

Eyewitness Alan Rayward, from The Rock, said he came out of Wilkinson, Market Street, at about 2.30pm yesterday to see two young Asian men jump out of an Astra.

He said they had baseball bats and what he thought was “a sawn-off handgun”. He said they smashed the back window of the car.

“Everyone came running out of shops then ran back in again scared,” he said.

“One woman screamed very loudly. Then the car that was smashed seemed to turn around and chase the first car, after the lads jumped back in.”

Officers are investigating the incident and urged any witnesses to contact Telford police on 08457 444888.
