Call for more detail on biomass
Tuesday 28th August 2007, 5:22AM BST.
Councillors in Bishop’s Castle are demanding more information about the town’s planned £5 million biomass power plant.
They said they needed to know details about a scheme earmarked for the town’s industrial park.
Mary Holton, a member of Bishop Town Council, said she had asked for details about a similar scheme operating in Portugal. However, she had not yet received the information requested.
And Dr St John Penney, a fellow town councillor, said he was also frustrated about the lack of information.
Janet Ince, council clerk, said she had also been chasing information from developers about the plant in Portugal, so officials could see what effects it had had on the local community.
Developers say they have provided plenty of information to local residents and plan to submit a planning application soon.
Meanwhile, one woman today said she did not know what all the fuss was about.
Dilys Thorpe, of High Street, Clun, said: “I realise when a group has objections to a project they must keep the whole issue before the public.”
Mrs Thorpe said the big question was whether the plant would be good for Bishop’s Castle.
“I suggest objectors to the biomass project visit www.greenpeace.org.uk for the Greenpeace view of the benefits of combined heat and power plants and the various sources of fuel, including biomass.”
