Firm to look at third wind farm

wind_farm.jpgAn international renewable energy company is planning to investigate the feasability of a third wind farm in Powys.

Acciona Energy is investigating the potential for generating energy from wind on land north of Llanbrynmair. Wind farm protesters have greeted the news with dismay.

The company has submitted a planning application to site a 47-metre high wind monitoring mast on Mynydd Nantcarfan intended to gather “vital information to assess the possibility of generating clean and renewable energy”.

Mike Paffey, senior development manager of Acciona Energy, said: “There are several factors that we have to take account of when identifying potential sites for wind farm development. These include wind speeds, environmental considerations, ability to connect to the national electricity grid, as well as visual impact.”

The company is already investigating other sites in Powys and recently held public exhibitions outlining plans for wind farm developments at Waun Garno, near Carno, and on Mynydd y Cemmaes. The company hopes to submit planning applications for those later this year.

“With less than three years remaining for the Welsh Assembly Government to hit its targets for renewable generation by 2010, new sources of green energy need to be sourced urgently,” added Mr Palfrey.

But Dan Munford, from Welshpool, who has been campaigning against wind turbines across Wales, said: “This isn’t the answer. It isn’t going to help the environment and it certainly isn’t going to help our tourism industry.”

Our energy is currently 90% dependant on fossil fuels, it is only a matter of time before we have a carbon tax on them, also international demand is rocketting and production hasnt kept pace because it cannot. Global oil production is likely to go into decline in the very near future. We need to reduce reliance on fossil fuels for environmental and economic reason. The fist industry to be hit by rising living costs will be the tourism industry, this is a much bigger issue than one single project. Our energy systems, economy and environment are under great strain and its starting to show.

In all other forms of electricity the fuel used to drive the turbines (coal, gas, oil, uranium, water) can be obtained over a period of time, stored and used when required. By using the fuel from the store electricity is generated when it is needed, rather than generating electricity when the fuel is available. Wind generation will not contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions and may actually increase them. This only becomes apparent when the effect of wind energy on the way the national grid is operated is taken into consideration.

Increasing the installed capacity of wind turbines only increases the amount of land used for wind turbines without making an effective contribution to the energy mix in the UK.

Until a means is developed to “store” the wind the most effective means of reducing carbon emissions caused by electricity generation is first to reduce the amount of energy used unnecessarily and then to make better use of the energy itself.
