New report of sheep attack

Thursday 23rd August 2007, 10:11AM BST.

Police investigating a dog attack on sheep at a farm near Shrewsbury, which left nine dead and eight others maimed, today said a second incident had been reported overnight.

Two dogs were seen worrying the flock at Eaton Constantine last night and one of them was a spaniel very similar in description to the dog which killed nine of the sheep a week ago at Mount Pleasant Farm, Wroxeter.

Last Thursday, seven sheep were killed and eight badly injured by a spaniel, which entered the field at Mount Pleasant Farm.

Two more sheep died from stress a short time later and the farmer moved his flock, but two dogs worried them again last night in Eaton Constantine.

Constable Dave Harte, who is investigating both incidents, said the owner of the terrier had been established and it was believed the spaniel belonged to the same person.

He said: “In this occasion, no sheep were injured as the dogs were spotted quickly by a neighbour, who managed to catch the terrier.

“The owner of the terrier has been identified and we believe the spaniel, which is sandy or brown in colour with long ears, also belongs to them. Enquiries into both incidents are continuing.

“We would once again warn dog owners to keep their animals secure at home or on a lead when in rural areas.

“We would also remind owners that a farmer is within his legal rights to shoot any dog on sight which is seen worrying his animals.”

What a ridiculous comment flora. You believe that dogs should be free to run amock on anyone,s property to kill whatever they fancy.Other peoples cats, baby lambs, foals etc.??Some dogs have been known to attack children. The owner of the dog is responsible for keeping it on his own property and is the one to blame when dogs get into trouble.Irresponsible owners are the problem and people who think like Flora. How can you possibly justify believing the farmer is to blame because he eats meat. What do think dogs eat?I would like flora to have to go out to a field of sheep the morning after a dog attack and pick up the pieces.Sheep with insides hanging out and still alive,in agony.A lamb trying to nurse on its dead mother. You would think differently about what you might do to those dogs and their owners because dogs who have had a taste of killing sheep will always come back for more. The heartbreak is with the lambs and the farmer who did nothing to deserve this.
