Claims of eco-lobby dismissed

Thursday 23rd August 2007, 9:59AM BST.

I am afraid all the “green” myths have been exploded by scientists who find that efforts to save the environment simply result in more damage.

Cloth nappies cost more in energy than disposable ones, due to water, heat and the detergents required to clean them.

Diesel trains are more polluting in terms of emissions and oil leaks (just look at the tracks in a station, with no soil batches to break spillages down) than using a 4×4 for the average family journey.

Walking or cycling is more damaging to the environment than driving, because the extra calories burned up have to be replaced by more food, that needs extra energy inputs, causing CO2.

Organic food production is the most wasteful in terms of resources and CO2 emissions, because organic cows produce less milk and belch more methane, likewise with organic beef.

Vegetarians don’t help either because their diet produces 10 times more methane.

The light output for low energy bulbs is only a third of the conventional bulb, so you would need three to replace one, hardly a saving, never mind the mercury released when such a bulb is smashed. In terms of eyesight damage, the poor light of low energy bulbs costs the health service.

They are not my fantasies or some anti-green agenda, but are the published findings of Defra and scientists.

The USA has found that conventional recycling is far more wasteful than simply landfilling or burning.

Heads should be knocked together!

I do really despair at Mr Kerswell…I do wonder where he gets his information from. For instance does he really believe that it is more eco friendly to drive everywhere ? thats just nonsense !

With regard to trains causing pollution he should view Shrewsbury station which has put down oil absorbant matting to soak up any oil spills.

Its Mr Kerwsell that needs a good shaking !

Mr. Kerswell is right I believe.
Please do not misunderstand me. I know global warming is occuring in a temoporary cycle. But as for thinking it’s something neigh the end of the world and all down to man. I don;t think so!
Phillip Stott, Emeritus Professor of Biogeography University of London wrote what a huge con it all is!
There is no rise in global warming since 1998 and the curve flattened to below 1998 levels recenmt research of the National Oceanic and atmospheric Administration!
Its suits this govrnment and its friends in other countries to keep us in a state of fear in order to control the population.
They say the ice is not enough for polar bears re warming, yet they’re having polar bear culls non stop. What sense can we make of that?

John, you have asked Mr Kerswell for the source of his “facts”. Fair play. Presumably you are also in possession of “facts” that disprove the former?

I have a fact that is indisputable. Those people who drive a Toyota Prius do not – unless in a purely urban environment – achieve the same MPG as a normal car with a common rail diesel engine. This, in conjunction with the increased CO2 emissions involved with the manufacture and disposal of the hazardous substances contained in the hybrid drivetrain of the Prius, make it substantially less eco-friendly than the sandalista driving it might think.

    Fact.

I have read articles published by the Royal Society and the fact that Wendy can quote one scientist that claims that climate change is some kind of con is all well and good, however three quarters of the papers have accepted that human activities have an effect o the earths climate. Thanks heavens Mr Kerswell is not making the decisions…..

This Wendy doesn’t inhabit Never Never Land :-)
I used to work for the MOD down south and the weather occupied much of the attention even then. Scientufic Civil Service part of the MOD being aware of the problems that could be caused by dams bursting etc. I think there’s a lot more going on than we realise now a days.
What can we make for instance of the Chinese shooting chemicals into the atmosphere to alter the weather so that they can be sure of a decent atmosphere fo the Olympics!!
There is such a lot more knowledge about as to how to use weather as a weapon of war too. I seem to recall mentioning about the website set up by the Americans in Alaska to research such weapons.
By the way the profesor about whom I wrote is now retired, but how mnay of the othere accecpting the “Queen’s shilling” arfe involved in this con?
All people interested in dogs medicine will be familiar with the dreadful fakery that goes on with pharmaceuticals and just how many MPS are being paid by these companies to put forward questions in the house etc.
Isn’t all human life based on the carbon atom…why the should more or less. Why if this is true don’t “they” whoever they are tell us what they have learned about altering weather conditions in their Alaskan hideout?
I don’t know. Surely the biggest threat to us is immigration much more of it and we wont have to orry about the climate in 10 years time there wont be that mnaay of us left:-(

Whilst I think that Mr Kerswell is a little to dismissive of the whole global warming debate, I’m sceptical of the idea that we’re causing it all by use of cars, and flying abroad for our holidays – we may be exacerbaing things a little, but we’re doing no more than that.

We must take care not to swallow hook, line and sinker the gross exaggerations of the anti-carbon brigade however – only last week I heard some idiot youth from amongst the various wasters who invaded the area around Heathrow claiming that an additional runway would ‘kill millions of people’.
Who? Could he name three of them? Or even the town in which they live?

It’s this kind of nonsense that reveals the blinkered attitude of the carbon lobby – only a proper balanced scientific study can reveal the causes of this, whether they be carbon emission related or due to solar activity or even changes in the Earth’s magnetic field. Unfortunately given the levels of propaganda we encounter about this such a study is unlikely to take place.

I wondered when Wendy would introduce immigration into the debate… Peter I quite agree with you in respect of the airport protesters, there has been new research published which proves the link between increased rainfall and human activity, no doubt Kerswell will dismiss it, the research was undertaken by the Met Office – of course the crazy conspiracy theorists will claim its all part of some big plot. At the end of the day I know who I believe and its not Kerswell…
