Area’s £23,000 from floods fund

Friday 17th August 2007, 11:02AM BST.

The Government today announced that south Shropshire is to receive £23,000 from a £6.2 million flood relief package being paid to 36 local councils to help people in the greatest need.

The money is aimed at the most vulnerable individuals and families.

It comes in addition to other funding from a government scheme that pays a contribution towards council costs in taking immediate action during the floods to safeguard life and property.

More than 5,000 cheques, ranging from £150 to £750, have so far been paid to people most in need to help replace items such as fridges, cookers, washing machines and furniture.

Communities Secretary Hazel Blears said: “The Government is committed to doing everything it can to support the local authorities and help communities get back on their feet as soon as possible.”

Ludlow residents will discuss the impact of the floods at a meeting tonight.

June 25 was a fateful day for residents of Lower Corve Street and Temeside as rivers flooded and houses, fields, livestock and possessions were left under water.

Just 25 days later, on July 20, constant rain raised the level of the town rivers and by the next day houses and gardens in Lower Corve Street and Temeside were again flooded.

Rosemary Wood, of Lower Corve Street, said: “Everyone in Ludlow affected by recent flooding has differing needs, questions and anxieties.

“We are holding an informal meeting at 7.30pm in The Friends’ Meeting Room, St Mary’s Lane, today, for residents affected by the flooding of the River Corve. It will provide an opportunity to voice our concerns.”
