Ricky out to keep bid alive

Young golf star Ricky Pharo was today carrying Shropshire’s hopes into the latter stages of the British Boys Championships at Royal Porthcawl.
The Hawkstone Park junior was playing in the last 32 of the prestigious under-18 competition against Christopher Parsons of Tredegar Park.
Pharo was forced to go down the 19th to defeat Italy’s Gabriele Heinrich in round one, but has since found the going easier – defeating Ben Cooper, of Bishop’s Stortford, 5&4 and Slaley Hall’s Kris Gray 3&2.
Pharo’s Hawkstone Park club-mates Tom Benbow and Ashley Chesters both bowed out in the second round, losing 4&3 and 6&5 to Spaniard James Martin and French youngster Damien Perrier respectively.
The dream is also over for Shifnal’s Richard Prophet who lost his second round encounter to Scottish Boys champion Paul Ferrier in horrendous conditions yesterday.
Prophet was two down in the early stages but had reversed the fortunes by the time the pair had reached the 14th tee.
Three lost holes on the trot left him staring down the barrel before a birdie on the 17th and a gritty half on the last took the match into sudden death.
But it was not to be Prophet’s day and Ferrier’s par at the first extra play-off hope ended the Shropshire player’s dreams.
