Crane restored at wharf project

A symbolic reminder of Ellesmere’s industrial past is being preserved as part of a multi-million pound scheme to revamp a derelict part of the town.
The first phase of plans to build hundreds of homes, a food store, a pub, a restaurant and retirement apartments at the former Wharf dairy site have now been completed.
Work has been carried out to ensure the crane at Wharf Head is preserved while work continues to regenerate the blighted and disused land and bring new jobs and investment into the area.
North Shropshire District Council worked with PB Developments to ensure the crane was restored and retained as a focal point for the development, setting the scene for the new public square.
Councillor Marilyn Patrick, portfolio holder for development strategy at North Shropshire District Council, said: “The Wharf is going through a major redevelopment process.
“We are extremely fortunate that the crane has been preserved as a significant part of our industrial heritage. The crane is the focal point of a new development, which will bring many new homes and jobs for local people.”
The Dairy Crest creamery shut down more than two decades ago and people have been waiting for the 30-acre site to be revitalised ever since.
Plans are also in place to make major improvements to facilities around the town’s mere.
An application for £1.1 million worth of Lottery funding is due to be submitted this week and will help to bring to life architectural plans and landscape designs for the £2 million project.
