Church trust seeking to repair pipes
Thursday 9th August 2007, 6:14AM BST.
A £30,000 scheme to repair leaky drain pipes at Ludlow’s famed St Laurence’s Church is planned by wardens.
The pipes, which carry water from the church’s roof to drains, are in need of urgent attention.
The Conservation Trust for St Laurence’s Church, which was immortalised in the verse of A Shropshire Lad by poet AE Housman, is behind the plans.
The trust was set up in 2006, when the Friends of St Laurence merged with the Fabric Trust to create a new charity.
Today Chris Jeffery, chairman of St Laurence’s fabric committee, said: “Our current initiative is a £30,000 project to replace and repair some of the church’s downpipes. Work is scheduled for mid-August to mid-September, and we are grateful to the conservation trust for its on-going support.”
Conservation Trust spokeswoman Rosemary Wood added that on August 25 there would be a porch sale from 9am to noon, in aid of the maintenance costs.
People who can help should telephone Mrs Wood on (01584) 877771 or e-mail rosemary.wood3@virgin.net
Organisers are seeking people who can provide local produce, cakes or preserves.
