£29,000 to recruit officer
Thursday 9th August 2007, 6:15AM BST.
A Powys charity has been boosted by a grant worth nearly £29,000 to employ a new officer.
Disability Powys, in Llandrindod Wells, is seeking someone to help run its patient forums and address access issues around the county.
The charity received the £14,341 grant from Lloyds TSB Foundation, which was matched by Powys County Council.
Chris Birch, chief officer at Disability Powys, said the money would pay the salary of a new access officer.
He added: “Since late 2006, public bodies have had to ensure equality is included at the start of new projects.
“This funding enables us to work closely with the council to ensure that disabled people’s needs and requirements are fully considered and they have full access to services.”
Disability Powys works closely with disabled people, the local authority, businesses and groups to provide information, support and representation.
They also run workshops and training as well as lobby for more disabled rights across Powys. It currently has more than 200 members.
Mike Lewis, manager for the Lloyds TSB Foundation in Wales, said: “It was clear at our visit that the team is driven in its determination to ensure disabled people in Powys have a strong, influential voice.”
Disability Powys is also recruiting disabled people in the county who would be interested in volunteering for consultation forums.
Training and travel expenses will be provided. Call (01597) 824059.
