Show bids to go carbon neutral

Wednesday 8th August 2007, 6:37AM BST.

The organisers of a summer show planned for a village near Bridgnorth are aiming to make it the UK’s first carbon neutral event.

Volunteer organisers of the Chorley Show have called in the Marches Energy Agency to sort out practical ways of reducing carbon emissions.

As well as initiatives for this year’s show on Sunday, a carbon footprint will be calculated and addressed for the 2008 show. Afterwards, the blueprint will be available to every other country show or festival.

Initiatives for the show include:

  • Visitors who arrive by bus will get an admission discount.
  • Bio-fuel generators will power attractions.
  • Food and drink, including real ales, will be Shropshire-produced to cut food miles.
  • Every cup, plate and drinks container will be composted afterwards.
  • Waste will be recycled.

Kris McGowan, Marches Energy Agency senior project manager, said of the show: “This year, the environment is at its heart as it seeks to provide a great Shropshire experience.”

Chris Tibbits, one of the co-ordinators, said: “Chorley Show has a good track record on the environment. Volunteers have diverted more than 11,500 plastic bottles from landfill since the community recycling project started at the 2006 show.”

Chorley is signposted off the B4363 Bridgnorth-Cleobury Mortimer road.

A brilliant initiative. Well done to the organisers, who are blazing a new future-friendly trail which we must all follow.

crazy idea it will never work, bio fuel grown on rain forest land shipped in from brazil hows that reducing co2! as for composting plates thats just plain stupid, food contact items cannot be composted on a farm, have you noticed we are in the middle of a foot and mouth epidemic, visitors will arrive by bus you wish, your article has just directed them to the road route too! madness, cancel the festival if you want to cut the carbs

Further to Mr Doggin’s points, the biodiesel is actually made locally from waste vegetable oil and not transported over from Brazil. There is a bus service provided specifically for the show. Visit the Chorley Show website for more detials and about how to get there by bus.
This crazy idea is working because it is all happening on Sunday. If you don’t belive it come along (by bus or walk) and see for your self!

I think this is a wonderful idea and wish the organisers all the best with their plans both for this year and beyond. I hope that many other show organisers will follow suit and show similar initiative and strength to take the lead and be responsible for doing the right thing. Well done!
