Princess AlexandraShrewsbury Flower Show’s royal president, Princess Alexandra, has sent a message of support to the organisers of this year’s event, which she will be attending. This year the princess, who is the Queen’s first cousin, accepted an invitation to become the show’s figurehead for the 2007 event in The Quarry next Friday and Saturday.

Her Royal Highness, who will spend the first day at the show, is the first royal visitor since the centenary show of 1974 when Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, was president.

In a message to the organisers, Shropshire Horticultural Society, and to showgoers, Princess Alexandra says: “Traditional events such as the Shrewsbury Flower Show play an important role in the Summer Season and bring much enjoyment to visitors from far and wide.

“Enormous efforts have been made by volunteers to make the show the spectacle it has always been and I offer my congratulations to everyone involved.

“I am certain that, like me, your many thousands of visitors are looking forward to visiting the show, with so much to enjoy both traditional and new.

“I wish the Shropshire Horticultural Society and the Shrewsbury Flower Show every success for the future.”

The Band of the Coldstream Guards, which performed at the first Shrewsbury Flower Show in 1875, will play a Royal Salute as the princess arrives at the showground.
