Mystery of fake officer

Tuesday 7th August 2007, 6:09AM BST.

bobby.jpgA man claiming to be from West Mercia Constabulary has been targeting people in Telford for the last two years, police revealed today.

The man, who calls himself James Newby, has been contacting business owners, pretending to be representing the force, but officers say they have no record of him.

Police said they do not know what the man’s intentions are.

Constable Pete Simmonds, Telford police spokesman, said: “At this time no offences have been revealed, but it is strange the name James Newby has been mentioned over the last couple of years.”
