Housing stock deal is sealed

District council bosses have signed a deal worth more than £10 million to sell off nearly 2,500 homes in north Shropshire.
The transfer of North Shropshire District Council’s housing stock to the Meres and Mosses Housing Association was finally completed on Tuesday afternoon.
The deal will pave the way for £100 million worth of repairs.
These are repairs that the council was unable to do.
The housing association will invest heavily to bring the houses up to a standard specified by the tenants themselves.
At the same time the district council stands to make more than £10 million from the sale, which will be invested in a trust to benefit all residents.
North Shropshire District Council assistant chief executive, Joanne Lancaster, said the deal was a good one for residents.
She said: “North Shropshire District Council is looking forward to a constructive, long-term relationship with Meres and Mosses Housing Association to provide residents of the district with a high quality of housing and more housing for local residents that is appropriate to their needs.
“Tenants have been fundamental in the creation of their new tenancies and they will continue to have their say in the future developments of the association.”
North Shropshire tenants were keen to see the deal go through after voting in a postal ballot in favour of selling their homes to a social landlord.
Transferring staff from the council to the housing association also helped to prevent any job losses.
Martin Holland, chief executive of Shropshire Housing Group, which will be an umbrella group covering Meres and Mosses and South Shropshire Housing Association, said: “I am really excited about the opportunities that this agreement presents for north Shropshire tenants.
“The new housing association will transfer housing staff currently working for North Shropshire District Council and I know that they are excited about the future too.”

“A good deal for the residents” Sounds like a fantastic deal for the Housing Association…. I wish the ordinary members of the public were given the opportunity to buy houses for £4000 each.

Only £4000 per house, sounds like a good deal for the Housing Association, even allowing for repairs. Could anyone buy such a property at this price Perhaps they left a nought of the price and nobody noticed?

Apparently rents have already started to go up, so how can this be the best move for residents? also £4k a house is a disgrace, the council should have given residents 1st option on buying their property. And what exactly does Mr Holland mean by “I am really really excited about the opportunities that this agreement presents for north Shropshire tenants.” what opportunities? is he saying that Nth Shropshire DC where not doing their job properly? and are M&M HA a charity if not they will be making a profit which Nth Shropshire DC were not charged to do?

Absolutely scandalous. Next we will be hearing the council are putting people up in hotels at great expense to the taxpayer because they dont have enough houses for them.

4 grand a house! we have been robbed – the tax payer paid for these homes to be built now the family silver is just given away, is this to do with unitary me thinks! As shropshire county council is so heavily in debt they are ordering all assets sold off soon, they are privatising the waste collection too, they have no respect for public services like counicl houses and bin men

Read the figures – the real price is £110m so you can add the additional 0 for the true price. There are rules as to how much the rents can go up by – not much – but wouldnt you rather pay a bit more rent for a fully refurbed property? Most private owners would love to spend this kind of money on their home but can’t afford to.
