Sven heads to Town game

Wednesday 1st August 2007, 12:15PM BST.

Shrewsbury Town Football Club's New Meadow stadiumFormer England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson will be the latest high profile name to appear at Shrewsbury Town’s New Meadow tonight.

The Swede will bring his Manchester City squad to face Gary Peters’s side in a pre-season friendly.

Premiership side City agreed to play the match as part of the deal which took former Shrewsbury goalkeeper Joe Hart to Eastlands last summer.

The England under-21 player, who is expected to play at least 45 minutes tonight, was bought by ex-City boss Stuart Pearce for an initial £600,000.

Town could receive up to £1.5 million if Hart goes on to win full international honours.

Tonight’s game follows friendlies against the A-Line All Stars – which included Gianfranco Zola, Graeme Le Saux and Gustavo Poyet – and Coventry City.

As well as Hart and Eriksson, Town will have another guest at tonight’s game. Sophie Foxley, nine, who suffers from leukaemia, has received an invitation from club bosses to watch the friendly.

Sophie, from Bicton Heath, and her family are huge Man City fans.

Mum Jane Foxley said: “Joe Hart, who used to go to Sophie’s school and used to play for Shrewsbury, is playing for Man City. He gave Sophie a signed shirt. Sophie has never been to a game before. She is really excited.”

Meanwhile Town chief executive Steve Wellbeloved today said the club was still looking to strike a deal to sell commercial naming rights for the New Meadow.
