Operation to clean up a success
Wednesday 1st August 2007, 3:30PM BST.
An operation to clean up the Donnington area of Telford, and tackle anti-social problems, law breaking and other issues was hailed as one of the most successful by police today.
Operation Clean Sweep saw agencies come together to tackle the problems. The month-long project saw criminals caught, which officers hope will reduce crime rates for the area for the weeks following the operation.
Constable Nikki Scott said: “The operation has been well received, has highlighted community focus and presented a clear reassurance model for the residents of Donnington.
“Not only has this operation proved a huge success from a local policing point of view, many of the partners have been delighted at the response they have received to the partnership work they have been involved with.”
Police said the fire service spent two days offering advice at Asda in Donnington and has since received more than 150 referrals for fire safety home checks.
Deb Morrison from Wrekin Housing Trust’s benefits advice service contacted 130 members of the public wanting information, including one elderly woman who was made aware of benefits she did not realise she was entitled to.
She is now £80 per week better off and has also received back payment for the last 12 months.
Since the operation Wrekin Housing Trust will follow up on 75 property inspections and Telford & Wrekin Council will visit the Sutherland School to talk about environmental crime.
Meanwhile, Neighbourhood Watch will be carrying out a recruitment campaign to start more schemes and the police will be working with Telford & Wrekin Council to develop a young people’s forum.
An awareness day will be held at Asda in Donnington on October 4.
Fiona Moore, Donnington neighbourhood co-ordinator at Telford & Wrekin Council said: “Every single partner agency involved has spoken of positive results and positive feedback, while human success stories such as the elderly lady able to claim back-paid benefits are clear examples of why everyone’s hard work is worthwhile.”

Excuse me for not applauding the Police for doing a job that they are supposed to be doing day in and day out but seems to have become forgotten in this target driven era we live in.
If that sounds like a criticism, it is but criticism of the results obsessed hierarchy and home office and not those at the front line in Policing and who haven’t yet swallowed the corporate pill so that they can produce very nice ‘sound bites’ in interviews.
The Police should be concentrating on producing constant results and having consistent levels of Policing rather than these showboat exercises in seeing how many politically correct phrases we can squeeze into an interview. This is just another prime example of ‘tick box’ Policing that we have come to expect from West Mercia. They’ve made the headlines in a small area of Donnington and everything will be fine for a while. Now the Police are off searching for their next partnership and headline.
