Pair must pay after assault

Friday 27th July 2007, 10:31AM BST.

Two teenagers who admitted assaulting members of a Shrewsbury family in a racist attack have been ordered to pay a total of £600 compensation to their victims.

Shrewsbury Youth Court today heard the victims now fear for their safety in public after a father and his two young sons were hit during the incident close to the Cineworld cinema in the town.

The court was also told one of the teenagers had drunk 11 pints of beer before carrying out the attack.

The youths, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were ordered to pay £350 and £250 compensation to the family respectively.

The pair, both aged 17, were also each given a six-month referral order which means they must attend meetings of a youth offending panel.

One of the youths must also pay £100 court costs.

One defendant today admitted three charges of racially aggravated assault, while another admitted one similar charge.

The court heard alcohol had played a major part in the assault.

I think it’s disgraceful they can’t be named. It’s a pretty dismal state of affairs when people can’t even take their family to the cinema safely because of their racial origin or appearance.

And these were teenagers too! What kind of poor quality adults have they been influenced by if they think it’s OK to be racist?

I note the article doesn’t say what race the victims and perpetrators belonged to. That’s probably a good thing – despite the abhorrent nature of this crime – it wouldn’t be good to draw negative connotations about the perpetrators’ race(s).

There are only really two types of human beings – good ones and bad ones.

Drinking 11 pints before the attack where did they get that from being 17 or which pub served them?? If these guys are old enough to drink then they should be old enough to take responsablility for thier actions and be named…

Jodie, you shouldn’t ask questions like that – it will embarrass the Police. They don’t bother with the fact that a 17 year old had drunk 11 pints of beer or that a landlord had served them whilst drunk (an offence) or the fact that they were under age (another offence). The Police dont know that, only you, as a member of the public know that. The book should have been thrown at these depraved little babies as it also should have been at the landlord. Whats the betting they dont pay the fine.

Very true, they will probably claim they can not pay, how can say this is alcohol related? its just 2 mindless twirps who cant handle their drink and have decided to pick defensless people, oh and guys if you cant handle your drink i suggest you dont bother..Most pubs dont care who they serve its money to them and probably 90% of the time they wont get caught…
