Joker Sunil’s charity book
Saturday 21st July 2007, 10:03AM BST.
A profoundly deaf Telford pupil has produced a book of his favourite jokes to help raise money for the Shropshire Deaf Children’s Society.
Sunil Bhakar, a Year 5 pupil at Wrockwardine Wood Junior School, has been amusing his fellow classmates with the jokes and has even roped them into selling copies of the book at break-time.
The youngster receives extensive support from his school plus additional help from a teacher, who is based within Telford & Wrekin and Shropshire’s Sensory Inclusion Service.
As an extension of Sunil’s literacy work, he has put together his favourite jokes in a book which he is selling at 10p a copy, with all proceeds going to the Shropshire Deaf Children’s Society.
The youngster, who lives in Trench, said: “I decided to write a joke book in aid of charity because I wanted to make people laugh, but I also wanted to raise money for Shropshire Deaf Children’s Charity as I am profoundly deaf myself.
“As part of my development work, I had to look at joke telling and why certain jokes made people laugh, so that’s where I got the idea for my book. I really enjoyed testing out all my jokes on other pupils, especially my favourite, which is ‘Who is the smelliest person in the world? King Pong.’“
Louise Davis, Sunil’s teacher, said: “Sunil’s book of jokes has put a smile on all of our faces while at the same time raising money for the Shropshire Deaf Children’s Society.
“He should be congratulated for his hard work, which will not only amuse people but also help out a very worthwhile charity.”
