Council hits back at claims
Friday 20th July 2007, 5:31AM BST.
Powys County Council has hit back at claims that it is not following its own policy while considering the future of six schools.
The council is currently consulting with communities on the future of primary schools at Howey, Llangurig, Llanfihangel Yng Ngwynfa, Carno, Llanwddyn and Pontneathvaughan, with results due to be considered in September.
Councillor David Jones, Board Member with portfolio for schools, said today: “The council has been completely open about the pressures created by surplus places.
“Funding at an average school is just over £3,000 per pupil but rises to more than £8,000 at a small school – a difference the council says cannot be justified.
“The council adopted a new schools policy in January last year, a policy that was then approved after widespread public consultation and support. We are now implementing that policy.
“Claims that we are not following our own policies are nonsense.”
It follows claims earlier this week by a new group of campaigners.
